Genius B*tchwork - Part 62: How ChatGPT built synth control files that saved hours per device

A music maker said they had ChatGPT dig up gear manuals, pull the boring numbers, and build Hapax device files for their synths. Here is

This is another Genius B*tchwork post.

Most weeks I show you the boring work my own AI did for me. In this series I show you something smart that AI did for someone else. A real person, a real win. Then I hand you the steps so you can try it too.

I did not do this one. I want to be super clear about that. I do not own this setup and I did not build these files.

Here is what happened.

Someone on Reddit was asked what the most useful thing is that they have done with ChatGPT. This person, u/SQL_INVICTUS, wrote a comment in August 2026 in the r/ChatGPT thread. They make music. They have a bunch of synths and other gear. And they use a sequencer called the Hapax, which can control all that gear if it has a "device definition file" for each one.

That file is basically a cheat sheet. It tells the Hapax the names of the knobs and settings on a synth, so you see "Filter Cutoff" on the screen instead of a random number.

Their story: they had ChatGPT find the gear manuals, pull out the tedious numbers, and write the device definition files. They described it as a big time saver. That is their own report, in one comment, about their own gear. I could not check how many hours, and I am not going to make up a number.

What the old way costs you

Here is the old way.

You open a PDF manual that is 100 pages long. You hunt for the MIDI chart, which is a giant list of numbers. You find the number for each knob. Then you type each one into a file by hand, in just the right format, for every single device.

One typo and a knob does the wrong thing. Or nothing. And then you do it all again for the next synth.

It is not hard. It is just slow and boring. That is the exact kind of work AI is good at.

What you get in this one

I wrote this so a total beginner can follow along, even if you have never touched a synth. The same idea works for any tedious job where you copy numbers out of a manual. By the end you will have:

  • The order of steps this method follows.

  • A prompt to get AI to find the right numbers from your manual.

  • A prompt to turn those numbers into a file.

  • A prompt to make AI check its own work.

  • The safety rules, so you do not load a bad file into your gear.

Quick and honest note before we start

Please read this part.

This is one person's comment on Reddit. It is self-reported. I did not see their files, their gear, or their time savings. I am teaching you the method they described, not a guaranteed result.

The prompts below are examples based on the reported method. The person did not share their exact words, so these are mine.

AI can get MIDI numbers wrong. It can mix up two models of the same synth. It can write a file in a format that looks right but is not. Check every file against the real manual before you load it into your hardware. Do the first one with a device you can afford to mess with.

Behind the paywall, you get the full how-to:

  • The 6 steps in order, start to finish.

  • 3 copy-paste example prompts, ready to use.

  • How to give AI the right manual so it does not guess.

  • A simple way to double-check the numbers.

  • What AI cannot do for you here.

  • A short steal-this recap you can save.
