Claude AI Connector Permissions: Check This Setting Before Linking Gmail, Google Drive, or Slack
The 2026 Claude setting that keeps AI useful without letting it send, share, move, or delete things too freely.
Most people connect Claude to their apps way too fast.
They add Gmail.
They add Google Drive.
They add Slack, Notion, GitHub, Calendar, or whatever tool they use all day.
Then they start asking Claude to work inside real accounts with real files, real messages, and real people on the other end.
That can be very useful.
It can also get messy if you never check the permission setting first.
The setting is connector permissions.
If you use Claude with connected apps, check it before you hand Claude a real work task.
What connector permissions do
Connectors let Claude use outside tools.
That means Claude can pull context from the places your work already lives.
Examples:
Read files in Google Drive
Search emails
Draft a message
Check calendar events
Look up Slack or team context
Work with issues, docs, records, or other tools
This is what makes Claude feel less like a blank chat box.
But a connected tool is not always just a reading tool.
Some tools can also change things.
Depending on the connector and your account, Claude may be able to draft, create, update, move, share, or delete items. Anthropic says connector access depends on the service and your source account permissions, and that Claude cannot get more access than you already have in the original tool.
That last part matters.
Claude is not getting a magic admin key.
But it may be using your own access.
That means your permission choices matter.
The three settings to look for
Anthropic's current connector docs use three permission choices:
Your account may show this at the workspace, connector, or tool level depending on your plan and setup.
If you do not see the full permission screen, use the same idea when Claude asks for approval in chat.
Do not click "allow always" on a risky action just to save one second.
My rule
Here is the simple rule I would use:
Reading can be fast.
Changing things should be slow.
Deleting things should usually be blocked.
That means:
Search inbox: Always allow
Read Drive files: Always allow
Draft an email: Always allow or Needs approval
Send a message: Needs approval
Share a doc: Needs approval
Move files: Needs approval
Delete files: Blocked
Spend money: Blocked or Needs approval
This keeps Claude useful.
It also keeps you in charge of the part that is hard to undo.
The easy mistake
The mistake is treating every connector the same.
Gmail is not the same as Drive.
Drive is not the same as Calendar.
Slack is not the same as GitHub.
Some connectors are mostly about reading. Some can create or change records. Some can touch team spaces. Some have different limits based on your plan.
For example, Anthropic's Google Workspace help page says Claude can search and read Gmail, and create drafts with your approval, but cannot send emails for you through the current Gmail connector. That is safer than a full send permission.
But Google Calendar can create, update, and delete events.
Other connectors can take different actions.
So the real habit is this:
Check the action list for each connector.
Do not assume.
The 60 second setup
Open Claude.
Go to your connector settings.
Pick one connected tool.
Look for tool permissions.
Then sort the actions into three buckets.
Bucket 1: safe enough to run fast
Use Always allow for low-risk actions.
Good examples:
Search files
Read docs
Read public or shared context you chose
Find a calendar event
Pull up a message thread
These actions help Claude stop guessing.
They do not send anything or delete anything.
Bucket 2: useful, but needs your click
Use Needs approval for actions that change the outside world.
Good examples:
Send a Slack message
Create or update a calendar event
Share a file
Move a document
Update a project record
Create a task in a team tool
The approval step is not there to slow you down for no reason.
It gives you one clean moment to check what Claude is about to do.
Bucket 3: off limits
Use Blocked for anything you do not want AI touching.
Good examples:
Delete files
Delete emails
Remove records
Spend money
Buy anything
Change billing
Change account access
If the action makes your stomach drop, block it.
You can always loosen the rule later if you have a real reason.
The permission map I would use
Copy this.
Claude connector permission map

Read calendar: Always allow
Read project records: Always allow
DRAFT

Create calendar event: Needs approval
BLOCK
Delete file: Blocked
Delete email: Blocked
Remove records: Blocked
Make purchase: Blocked
Change billing: Blocked
Change account access: BlockedThis is not about fear.
It is about making AI useful in the right lane.
How I would use this at work
Here is a safe first workflow.
Connect Google Drive.
Allow Claude to read the folder you actually need.
Ask:
Look at the files in this project folder.
Give me the 5 things I need to finish this week.
Tell me which file each item came from.
Do not edit, move, share, or delete anything. That is a good use of a connector.
Claude gets context.
You get a clearer plan.
Nothing gets changed.
Then, when you are ready to let Claude draft something, ask:
Draft the reply I should send.
Do not send it.
Show me the final text first.
Tell me if anything in the draft came from a connected file or message. That is the right order.
Read first.
Draft second.
Approve before action.
Quick checklist
Before you use a new Claude connector for real work, check this:
Read actions are set on purpose.
Search actions are set on purpose.
Draft actions are set on purpose.
Sending is set to Needs approval.
Sharing is set to Needs approval.
Moving is set to Needs approval.
Deleting is set to Blocked unless you have a very clear reason.
Buying or billing actions are set to Blocked.
You review the permissions again when the connector adds new tools.
One minute here can save you from a lot of cleanup later.
