AI for Entrepreneurs: Part 43 Build A Working Claude Skill In Ten Minutes, Without Writing Any Code

Use the skill builder that ships inside Claude, install what it makes, and test whether it fires on its own in a fresh chat.

You have typed the same instructions to Claude at least ten times. Keep it under four sentences. Use my voice. Always end with a next step. Every single time, from scratch, like the last conversation never happened.

That is ten minutes a week you are paying to repeat yourself. Over a year it is a full work day spent typing something you already wrote out once, badly, in a chat you cannot find anymore.

By the end of this you will have a real Skill built, installed, switched on, and tested. Claude will apply it without you asking. And you will not have written one line of code, because Claude has a builder inside it that does the writing.

Here is what you will be able to do:

  • Explain what a Skill actually is, in one sentence, with no jargon.

  • Build a working Skill without writing a single line of code.

  • Install that Skill in Claude and switch it on.

  • Test whether it fires on its own, and fix it when it does not.

  • Find free ready-made Skills instead of building everything yourself.

This is for total beginners. If you can answer questions about how you like your work done, you can do this.

The proof behind this

Liz Elliott is not an engineer and never studied computer science. She runs 33 active social brands, and her main account @liz.on.the.web has 241,000 followers. That output comes from saved instructions doing the repeat work, not from her typing the same brief every morning.

She also rebuilt a 403 guide archive into the 103 lesson course this article comes from, which is exactly the kind of long boring repeat job a Skill is for.

What this lesson is

Lesson 8.2 of the free AI for Entrepreneurs course, in Module 8: Building Skills.

Skills are simpler than most people make them.

A Skill is a saved set of instructions. Claude loads it when the task matches. That is the whole thing.

Under the hood, a Skill is a folder with one plain text file inside it, called SKILL.md. That file has two main parts. The description tells Claude when to use the Skill. The instructions tell Claude how to do the task. No code. No API. Just text.

Think of it like the onboarding doc you would write for a new hire. You do not want to stand behind that person and explain your report format every Monday for a year. You write it down once. They read it when the job comes up.

The description is the part people get wrong. It is not a label. It is the trigger. Claude reads every installed Skill's description to decide whether the Skill is relevant right now. If the description is fuzzy, the Skill never fires and you assume Skills do not work. Spend more time on the description than on the instructions.

One more thing worth knowing up front. The place where Skills live inside Claude has moved between versions, and different people will tell you different menu paths. Look for Skills in Claude's settings. The wording around it changes. Skills itself does not.

Behind the paywall

  • The one line that launches the built-in skill builder, and the two settings to change before you run it.

  • A complete SKILL.md you can copy and edit, with a description written the way descriptions should be written.

  • The install path, including the zip step that trips up almost everyone the first time.

  • The test that tells you whether your trigger actually works, which is not the test most people run.

  • The debug prompt for when a Skill sits there and never fires.

  • Where to get free ready-made Skills instead of building everything yourself.

  • Nine mistakes, and the nine point checklist.

What paid subscribers get overall

Paid subscribers get the full build on every lesson in this series. Every copy and paste prompt, every menu path, every checklist, and every mistake list. Not the summary. The thing you actually run.

You also get the whole back catalog, and the ones coming every other day after this.

Ten minutes from now you could have a Skill installed and firing. The build steps and the file template are past the line.

This is the lesson people tell me changed how they use Claude. Not because it is clever. Because after it, they stop repeating themselves.
