You do the same job every week. Writing the landing page. Checking the contract. Explaining the numbers to yourself. Every week you open a chat, type the same long explanation of how you like it done, and start over.
Somebody already wrote that explanation down. They packaged it. They gave it away for free.
Doing it the slow way costs you the same twenty minutes every single week, forever. It also costs you quality, because a tired explanation typed at 9pm is worse than one somebody built carefully and thousands of people improved.
By the end of this you will have real skills installed, checked, and edited to sound like you. Five departments' worth if you want them: marketing, social media, design, finance, and legal. Zero dollars.
Here is what you will be able to do:
Find a free skill for a job you do every week.
Run three checks on a skill before it touches your computer.
Install a skill in Claude Code or upload one into Claude in the browser.
Add five departments' worth of skills in an afternoon, for zero dollars.
Edit a skill so it stops sounding like it was written for somebody else.
This is for beginners. You do not need to code. The commands in here look technical and are not. You copy a line, you paste it, you press enter.
The proof behind this
Liz Elliott is not an engineer and never studied computer science. She runs 33 active social brands, and her main account @liz.on.the.web has 241,000 followers. The whole operation runs on AI automations spread across several computers, and a big part of that is skills she installed once and edited to sound like her.
She also runs an AI community called Uprise, and rebuilt a 403 guide archive into the 103 lesson course this article comes from. None of that got done by retyping instructions every week.
What this lesson is
Lesson 7.4 of the free AI for Entrepreneurs course, in Module 7: Connecting Your Tools.
A skill is a folder of instructions you hand to your AI. Inside it is a file that says how to do one specific job, the way a good person on your team would do it. You install it once, and from then on your AI knows that job.
You do not paste it in every time. You do not pay a subscription for it. It sits there and it fires when it fits.
Thousands of these already exist and most of them are free. Marketers published theirs. Social media people published theirs. Designers published theirs. Anthropic publishes official ones for finance and legal work. You can have five departments running by dinner without writing a word.
Here is the catch, and it is the whole reason this lesson is longer than "go download some skills."
A skill you never customized is a smart intern who has never met your business. It knows the craft. It does not know your prices, your customers, your voice, or your rules. It will hand you competent work that could belong to anyone. Installing takes a minute. Customizing takes about twenty minutes per skill, and that twenty minutes is where all the value is.
And a skill is a set of instructions your AI will follow, using whatever access you already gave it. That makes installing one closer to running someone's script than to reading their blog post. Most are fine. Checking is still cheap, and this lesson teaches the check before it teaches the install.
From Liz's playbook: Liz Elliott is not an engineer and did not study computer science. She built four software products with AI help: PRISM, AutoViral, UPRISE Social Studio, and Profounder. The commands in this lesson look technical and are not. You copy a line, you paste it, you press enter.
